It's a New Year and time for Nicknames - MORE UPDATES ADDED 1/15!!

OK gang, we have been together for more than 5 years now!  We have formed some wonderful friendships.  We do awesome parties!  (By the way - thanks to all of you for wishing me a happy birthday...you are a very special group).   But the one thing we have lacked is NICKNAMES.  We are close enough that we should have nicknames.  If for nothing else, for our "core group" that has stuck together.

So I want nominations for everyone below (send to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ).  I will start the balll rolling with potentials for each.  Crudeness is kinda OK if it doesn't fall off the cliff.  Everyone needs to take this as a fun thing with NO hurt feelings.  OK, so those should be the rules and the only rules?

Mike Zengel "Swiftfeet", "Izumi" or just "Shoes" - ISN'T IZUMI A GREAT NAME??!!!  (Mike owns Swiftfeet running store)

Rob Turpin "Surfer" "Boston" "Playboy", "Tan Man". (Rob's email/best race/normal lifestyle)

Tim Schuette "Sky Pilot"  (Tim is a pilot for Southwest),  "Wings"??

Steve Orth "Badger" (Steve grew up here and went to Prescott High. "Fun Run" or "2 Mile" are great potentials since talks about only doing races of that nature!  "Beard-y Buddy"

Dan Munsell "Racehorse" (Dan once told me that he was something very close to the word "racehorse" but I can't put it on here but if you took the word "Racehorse" and kinda took the last 2 letters out and said it again - you might get it? Dan loves to do races).  "RW"  short for the 2 words that would sound like "Race Hor" - Hey this was NOT my suggestion! Another potential is "Dave".  Kind of a long story supplied by Julie but this one is a hoot!  Read on... Years ago, he used to ride the bus to Palo Verde Nuclear plant to work, and I would drop him off at the bus stop and pick him up every day.  I would always say, "Hi/Bye BABE," when I dropped him off or picked him up and give him a kiss.  However, everyone on the bus misheard it as my saying "Hi/Bye DAVE", and one day, he was getting off the bus to come home, and literally everyone on the bus was saying, "Bye Dave!" "Have a good night, Dave," "See ya, Dave!" and so on, which he cheerfully returned to them all.  He got to me, and I'm like WTF?  He hushed me and then told me in the car that he just didn't have the heart to tell them all that they misheard me.  He also said he was the only one everyone greeted and said goodbye to every day, and since his wife called him "Dave", they did too, despite his ID tag saying very clearly in big letters that his name is DAN.  LOL.

Julie Munsell "First Aid".  (Because Julie is always the first to aid the group), MA-id, (Like Mobile Aid), MASH, SNAP, FLASH (Julie is our designated photographer too..."Cat Herder" because that is what she does to get a group photo of us.  "Starfire" this goes back to Julie's school days too!  Another long story!  "B-A-S-A"  (Best Aid Station in Arizona)

Jessica "YMCA" (What else is even remotely better for Jessica?,  "Smiles" Does anyone smile more than Jessica?

Dave Zelman "Woodie"  (Dave owns a 1951 Ford Woodie)

Deb Cowell  "Ragnar" (Deb is the queen of our group). "La Tortuga" (Deb loves turtles and this is a naickname from way back), Notebook, Bookie or Master Plan!!  "Allie McBeal" (a petite legal eagle)

Jim Pullaro "Casino"  (This is kind of a long story but some of you will understand I hope)...

Lest we forget Brian Peacock and how can we?  "Globetrotter", "On and On" and "Storyteller" would all fit.

John Erickson "Mr. Walker" (our resident race walker)...

Laurie Carr "VA" (She retired from the Veteran's Admin")

Ken Ekman "The Unit"  (Only Rob and Heidi are expected to get this one and we better leave it at that).  "Twinkies". "Stretch", "Road Trip".

MY FAVORITE --------  HEIDI SCHUETTE

As you know Heidi recently had a baby.  That makes her a "Momma".  You might also know that Heidi and I both share a love of "The Office".  Funny show.  Well in one of the episodes, they were playing a murder mystery and the blonde accountant "Angela" played the character of "JooJoo Momma JooJoo".  I think that would be an appropriate name for Heidi as long as you don't have to try and say it fast 10 times or while sitting next to Mike at the Brewery slamming beers! Other suggestions:  Olympia, Olypian, Vanish, Speedy and of course we will never forget "F26"...her number in the Olympic trials and the name we wanted to give to Heidi's baby (Kai) if he had been a girl.  "Blonde Lightning".  "Momma"

Kai - Just call me "BOB"  (stoller name!)

OK gang - here is your BIG CHANCE - I will post all entries as they come in!  Ken

Well 2009 is in the books. We've had a lot of fun, training, and races. Met new friends and others have left the area (one escaped the country completely).

Our newest member is a bit of a slacker, just riding around in the “BOB”, but what can you expect from a newborn. Congrats to Heidi and Tim.

Last year we never got Ken to the Grand Canyon, I guess we'll have to try again this year.

Upcoming races: 1/9 Mini-Tri in Prescott Valley, 1/17 PF Chang Marathon in Phoenix, 2/13 Skirt Chaser 5K in Tempe, and 2/14 Lost Dutchman in Apache Junction. Don't forget the Skull Valley 10K on 4/10 or the Whiskey Row races on 5/1.

I plan to do the GORD on 3/20 and will be training on the course at Pioneer Park weekends, if you'd like to come out and go for a couple of runs and a ride, let This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it know and we can hammer out the details.

Tucson marathon results!!!
Written by Ken Ekman
Sunday, 13 December 2009

OK, it was an awesome day in Tucson but before I get into Rob Turpin's top 15 finish, I need to acknowledge a couple of our past members, Kathy Dahl ran a super 4:31 marathon and finished 4th in her age group!  Serena Lackey ran a 3:29 and won her age class (of 22!).

Down in Phoenix Dan Munsell and Deb Cowell finished 3rd in the "Muddy Buddy" and Steve Orth/Jessica Leary finshed something like 15th in their doubles event race.

Back to Rob..inspite of several things stacking up against Rob, he ran terrific.  He chose to ride down with me and my entourage (even though I dropped out due to a late foot injury) and he was a trooper as the group wanted to go shopping all day and had a late dinner.  Then the winds came up in during the race, basically in the face for miles 16-24...fairly strong especially miles 20-24 as Rob was really picking off the competition.  When we first got to him, he was at mile 14 and probably had a hundred runners in front him.  80 for sure.  Probably a 100.

Rob was hanging with 5 or 6 in the fastest pace group - the 3:00 pace group.  As we worked our way down every few miles to pick Rob up again, the pack kept diminishing until at mile 21 it was basically Rob, the pacerand fate would add a guy that I talked to that smoked Man vs. Horse this fall as he (Chris) joined the pace group with Rob. Chris amazingly sat next to Rob on the bus to the start!  Small world since there were some 1400 runners in the marathon.

Looking fresh everytime we saw him, mile 21 was showing some pain and no doubt it was a drag with the wind stiffening.  Everyone was now suffering but Rob hung tough and stayed in touch with the 3 hour pacer. The winner came in at 2:41. 2nd place was 2:43 and the third place male finished in 2:50. The first place woman finished in 2:53.  Could Rob make 3 hours???  A distant goal and a very tough one since he had only run 2 marathons and they were 3:11 and 3:12 (PF Chang and Boston).

Here comes Rob up the last hill and turning toward the finish...It looked like he would be just over 3 hours - but maybe he could pick up the difference in chip time??  So close!  After this all out effort, Rob almost went down and we struggled to get him to the massage tent and get some food and drink into him.  As Rob was recovering, I went to the results and saw that he had a 3:00:23 finish and 3:00:14 chip time!  Rob had set a huge PR.  Even better, he finished 17th overall, 15th male and WON HIS AGE CLASS ---- 1st of 125!!

Of the races I have seen that included members of our group - this ranks up there with Heidi Schuette's Olympic trail race in Boston (Apr 2008) and Dan Pemble's Boston marathon the next day. I will never forget seeing Dan coming down Boylston street finishing something like 385th of 25,000 in 2:46/2:47.  This coming the day after watching Heidi running in a middle pack in the Olympic trials as I recall looking at my watch at mile 14 and calculating in my head that she was running a 6:08 pace.  I did it 3 times in my head coming up with the same number.  I was in shock.

Rob has only been running a couple years.  He keeps getting better.  I wish I could have run today but I'll get another shot at Boston (with Rob) complete with a "Boy's week out" trip including Rob, my car buddy Dave Zelman who is entering the 5K the day before, hopefully my Minnesota running buddy, Jeff Kathan who has flown in and now run more Whiskey Row marathons than me - since I missed this years event due to the proximity and pains caused by Boston last April. Jeff will do the 5K too and I am still working on Steve Orth returning for another Boston 5K where he did so well this spring!

I have been pumped all day and I didn't even run.  I had to get ths writing so I can settle down.  This was Rob's day.  This was Kathy and Serena's big day too.  I hope tomorrow is your big day.  Keep trying.  Before today, I was ready to chuck it after having so many injuries this year.  After returning to the Tucson marathon, I am so jazzed that you will have to shoot me to keep me from returning and being better than ever.

Rob, you are THE MAN.  It was worth the price of admission to see you cruise for 20 and then totally gut out the rest.  Nice job, my friend.  Ken out.

Peeps-

Ok so you aren't a fast runner.  You are out of shape.  You want to look better and feel better.  There is no magic, everyone in our club has been there at some time and some of us still are there!  We have had several new members in the past couple weeks and now is a good time for you to join us with the weather about to get a little cooler and the monsoon rains/humidity about to be a memory.

We have a huge variety of ages and ability and none of that seems to matter to anyone in our group.  When it is time for you, seek us out via our calendar.  We are a fun and supportive group.  Nobody is going to make fun of you (well maybe Ken will but we all ignore him anyway).  Anybody can run but with our group you will learn to run better, faster and with less effort.

Come on out.  Just put on some sneakers and walk up to anyone in our group and before you leave that night you'll have a group of new friends.  Just do it...
